The Group has substantial experience in the production, bottling, packaging and dispatching of wines. A boldly individual approach, dynamic team, long term focus and mutually beneficial business relationships have created substantial growth that in turn has contributed to the creation of 30 additional permanent jobs over the last 4 years. On the environmental front Deetlefs leads the way in the South African wine industry by being the 1st to install a fully fledged biological wastewater treatment plant (SBR).

The unusual name Groot Eiland (big island) derives from the fact that our cellar and its farms are literally surrounded by the water of the great Breede and Molenaars rivers.

The Wine Cellar, surrounded by sunbathed vineyards, is located on the banks of these two large meanderings rivers. An average winter rainfall of 650 mm per year results in deep, fertile alluvial soil and lush vineyard growth.

The cellar was established in 2005, because of our passion for the land and wine. Winemaker and owner, Albertus van Rensburg, says "The challenge for me is to bottle the uniqueness of our terroir, hillside vineyards and rocky soils, that is commonly associated with high wine quality.
